Theresa Garnero

Theresa Garnero is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, Board Certified in Advanced Diabetes Management, holds a Master of Science degree in Nursing, and is a nationally known Certified Diabetes Educator and cartoonist. She has 25 years experience as a nurse caring for people with diabetes in a wide variety of settings.

After receiving the prestigious national 2004-2005 Diabetes Educator of the Year Award from the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE), along with the Allene Van Son Award for her diabetes cartoons, Theresa lectured nationwide about using humor with diabetes self care management. She is the author and illustrator of DIABETease: a lighter look at the serious side of diabetes, which was translated into Spanish. She is a prolific writer and cartoonist. She won the 2008 international Inspired by Diabetes contest for her healthcare entry, “Pin the Pancreas on the Piggy”. Her cartoons are published in many countries.

In 2008, the American Diabetes Association published, “Your First Year with Diabetes”. It garnered 3 national awards and an international award as well; the incredibly improved 2014 edition is completely revised and should garner a cameo Oprah appearance (she did consult with Oprah once – ok, Oprah’s producer).

Theresa is a well-known lecturer as well as researcher. She uncovered hidden rates of diabetes within the LGBT community; she summarized the unique challenges facing the sexual minority with diabetes including potential suicide risk for questioning youth in a Diabetes Spectrum article.

She wanted to take action and do something about the lack of physical activity, about the tsunami of incoming diagnoses, about providing avenues to prevent and manage diabetes that included the person with and at-risk for diabetes, and about increasing access to care. Oh, and make it FUN. She combined her musical and sports-infused upbringing with her professional knowledge of diabetes and absolute love of dance. Hence, she founded the non-profit Dance Out Diabetes. It has stirred national interest and is well on its way to success. Her next mission is to find other dedicated individuals who will help scale this up whether through philanthropic or volunteer support. Could this be you?
